Meaning of REACH in Germany and in the EU

On June 1st, 2007, the directive 1907/2006/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council came into force. This is a uniform chemical directive of the EU member states which regulates the registration, evaluation, approval and limitation of chemical substances in preparations and products and which harmonizes the chemical law applicable up to now.

The target of REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) is to encourage the safe use of chemicals and to allow preventive health and environmental protection. All chemicals, independent if they have dangerous properties or not and which are marketed in quantities of more than one ton per year by manufacturers or importers are registered in a central database. The European Chemical Agency (ECHA) in Helsinki assumes the administration of REACH. The manufacturers and importers are made responsible themselves for the safety of their chemicals by the fact that they must summarize the data which are necessary for the evaluation and registration by an exchange of information along the whole value added chain.
